Update on Leopard Upgrade

February 25, 2008 by debbie T | Mac CornerMac Software

Here’s the update on my Leopard upgrade progress.

I received the replacement Leopard disks in Saturday’s mail, and Saturday night I installed. Guess what. The SAME problem happens. When I access the Applications folder, Finder crashes, then relaunches.

Oh no!

I decided that I should wait until a normal business day to re-call Applecare, so I did that tonight. My call started at around 8:30pm. I was on hold until about 8:45pm. Went over the whole story again with the rep, but he couldn’t help because I spoke to the “product specialist” before, so I needed to talk to a specialist again.

Back on hold…this time I waited on hold for about 40 minutes until John arrived on the phone. John seemed competent enough, although when I mentioned that I used Onyx to check my Smart Status, he said he never heard of Onyx. Huh? I was a bit surprised, but I explained that it was a utility app.

That’s the funny thing I’ve noticed about Apple employees. I don’t know if they are really that cloistered or they just play dumb, but they don’t like to admit that there is anything outside Apple or Apple.com.

Anyway, back to my story. We booted into the DVD/CD drive and in Disk Utility checked the Smart Status, which was verified. Then I had to dig out my original MacBook Pro, and I held down the “D” key while it booted into the Hardware tests. It tested the memory, and all was well.

So, at this time, he seemed to think that there was probably a hardware issue with my MacBook Pro, so he set me up with a few names of service providers in my area. Even though, there is an Applestore (or two) fairly close to me, he gave me the name of an independent location. I looked up the company, and they specialize in Microsoft and Vista. Even though it is hardware they are checking, I think I would rather just head to the Applestore.

So, I just finished making an appointment with the Genius for tomorrow at 3:15pm. heavy sigh. I hope this works out well. I really want to start enjoying Leopard!!

Oh and I almost forgot to mention. The disks they sent me also included iLife 2008, so I don’t feel so bad about my trouble now!

And I am going to return Aperture 2 (purchased but not opened yet) because now that I have been messing around in iPhoto 08, I think I like it, and it might meed my needs for now. Maybe later this year, I will purchase Aperture 2 again. Oh and since Photoshop Elements 6 is coming out very soon, it would be in my best interest to wait.

So, hopefully tomorrow I will have some more answers on the problems I am having with Leopard.
