Thanks for posting, Diane. Some people think that once it's online, it's up for grabs for anyone to use. It bugs me too!

And I just checked the link for that guy, and looks like his post has finally been taken down.

Photos are so difficult to protect. You can upload low resolution and smaller sized versions online. But that won't stop someone from using it for web use.

I keep wanting to officially copyright a batch of my photos. It's so easy to do, and that way you can actually get restitution from anyone that takes them without permission.

If you are interested,
this article really put it into perspective for me.

Now I just have to get off my butt and do it!!!

About 2 years ago I discovered two different people, and one of them was a business, that lifted an entire article I had written (and had clearly indicated it was copyright protected) and they pawned it off as their own. I wrote each one a "cease and desist" letter. The one man took the material down immediately but the lady who had the business absolutely refused! Can you believe that. So, I had my husband who is a lawyer do me a favour and send her a cease and desist letter plus I contacted all of her suppliers. That got her to take it down.

I've recently been quite concerned about my photos because, unlike text, it is very difficult to track stolen photos down on the 'net.

It bugs me no end that people so openly and willingly steal other people's work.

So glad you posted this!

I have a specific page with my terms of use on it. I even included the link when I wrote to him.

I can't imagine Google having a problem with taking his post down. I wish the whole site was removed, but they can't do it unless more people complain.

I am faxing my complaint today when I get to work. We'll see what happens.

that sucks! one thing you might want to do (that probably has zero effect on anything) is to put a Creative Commons license on the theme of your blog. It's an easy way to make sure you have the rights defined that YOU want to have for your blog.

Mine is http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/ which means attribution, no derivative works, non-commercial use. I don't know if it would give weight to your claims but it's worth a shot.
